Hi, I'm Veronique Raskin and I am the founder & CEO of The Organic Wine Company. My blog is mostly about organic wine & self-development, as well as anything else that interests and inspires me!
Dear friends, bonjour to you!
I woke up this morning with a song in my head, by Nina Simone famed American blues singer, “It’s a new dawn, It’s a new day, it’s new life for me… And I’m feeling good”. I don’t usually wake up singing a happy song to myself, I am more likely to watch my “to do” list scrolling down in front of my inner eye. So I wondered what was happening to me, what had shifted for me in the last few days? I really had this sense of new beginnings. Why? Well, March 1st is our company’s corporate New Year’s day and here it was upon us again; so why not use this as an excuse to reflect, jump forward, award a few Oscars to ourselves and dare to dream a few dreams?
Let’s do just that. Come with me on a brief journey.
I have had many significant interactions over the past several days. One of them was with a dear friend of mine who lives in France. She said to me: “Yes, I am on your mailing list, so I get your e/commercials, but I don’t look at them, since I can’t order anyway.” My friend is not terribly computer-savvy, so she hadn’t clicked on the link to our website, and thus, hasn’t read any of my blogpostings. So she was very much out of my loop. That made me very sad.
You see, we are speaking of good intentions misread, expectations not met. To us, our weekly “exclusive offers” are not just a way to sell our stuff (a marketing ploy), but a way to stay connected with you, enlarge your world, connect you with some pretty sensational human beings and their wines, the products of their terroir and the fruits of their labors. Life is all about teamwork and we enjoy including you in our mission, creating a circle of goodness, helping to keep us all inspired and motivated to “live a life that matters”.
Thus to all of you out there who have yet to visit (or re-visit) our new website, and thus do not know what we have really been up to: welcome, bienvenue! Let me catch you up with what has been happening on V’s planet-this is important to me, and it is my hope that it will be good, and perhaps useful for you as well.
A little background: speaking of inspiring one another towards “a life that matters,” (i.e. studying the mecanics of deep inner peace and harmony with one’s self, -being in one’s rightful place and therefore happy). Over the holidays, while reading Blair Singer’s Team Code of Honor: Secrets of Champions in Business and Life, I was happy to confirm my long-held opinion that it is not (alas) the team that has the best man or the best products that ‘wins’ the game, but it is the team that has the best team spirit. Clear enough.
I was so happy to have an objective expert-Mr. Singer defines precisely what that team spirit is and how it is developed. While there are a few exceptions to the rules, basically the team that wins is the team that puts the Mission first, the team’s need second and their individual needs third. Guess what? Strangely enough, at the end of the day, everyone is served including the individual’s personal needs.
In the “me first,” or “what’s in it for me” culture that we currently live in this might be a bit counter-intuitive, but nevertheless it is still true. I have observed it myself, time and time again, both in business settings and in families (OMG!). It’s heartening to see that Singer has data to confirm my observations. It was once put in even more succinct terms: “A house divided upon itself cannot stand.” Yep.
So I set out to apply Singer’s recommendations starting with a clarification/ update to our mission. We are finished with trying to convert the skeptic. Now we just want to reach our choir, our fans; we want to connect with and serve those of you who already live an organic lifestyle, whoalready eat organic and who are now ready to drink organici.e. drink quality wines made with certified organic grapes, EU-approved wines-vins biologiques. It matters to your health, your children’s health, the health of our farmers, the health of our animals and our planet. And now through us you can do so affordably and pleasurably.
I was born with a strong sense of mission, God knows why. But for some reason it is important to me to develop all my talents and put them to the service of something way greater than myself. So, following one of Stephen Covey’s principles: “start within your own sphere of influence.” yes I would love to save the Rainforest single-handedly and all the polar bears and all the elephants: but I can’t do that yet so there is no point crying over it.
The focus has been refined to be on what I can do: cultivate a rock-solid team, then invite kindred spirits (that’s you) into our mission-give you the opportunity to be involved-together we can contribute positively to beautify this already magnificent tapestry that we live in. In the world of wine, that includes helping lands that are planted with vines treated with care and respect, thus producing a fruit that will nourish you, and not do damage to you, others or the land itself.
